«I liked the very idea of the competition: Rodari and the Russian avant-garde are two loves. I have loved Rodari since childhood and have been interested in the Russian avant-garde since my studies at the school. I did not rush between Malevich and Burliuk, I remembered the episode and the poster in the style of the Russian avant-garde from the book and immediately understood how to depict the house of Pan Pumpkin ... I am very grateful for the high assessment of the members of the jury of the competition. »

About Gianni Rodari

Gianni Rodari (1920–1980) – Italian storyteller, well-known and beloved by children and adults across the globe, especially in Russia. Characters of Rodari’s tales, such as Chipollino or Gelsomino, are good friends of many generations of readers. And the toy-locomotive named ‘Blue Arrow’ still delivers New Year presents to the kids.

Rodari was born in the north of Italy in 1920. After finishing a catholic seminary, he worked as a schoolteacher. Ten years passed before he started writing, but publishing children’s poems in a newspaper and later in ‘The Pioneer’ magazine, he always remembered that his students were far more interested in lessons if he approached a problem with an out-of-the-box solution, not with a straightforward one. It was more fun, hence rewarding.

And as a writer he continued making up stories where one can learn something in a rather unusual way. You can deny everything and ask children to correct the mistakes, you can give the reins to your imagination and read backwards, invent funny math without numbers, try to figure out the smell of different crafts, learn world history or fly to another planets.

Quotes from Gianni Rodari’s books

One can talk about serious and important matters by telling tales.
A creative mind is a mind that is dynamic, inquiring, detecting problems where others do not see them, believing that everything has a ready-made solution; it feels comfortable in a changing environment, where others see danger; it is capable of making its own decisions. And all these qualities are revealed in the creative process. And this process is as fun as a game.
"How should I learn? I have no books and no money to buy them with." "Never mind, the life will teach you. Just keep your eyes open - you need to see through all the crooks and swindlers, especially those who have power."

10 interesting facts about Gianni Rodari and his characters

In youth Gianni played violin and together with several friends played gigs in taverns
Before the war and the communist party Rodari was a member of the youth movement of the nationalist party. It was mandatory for all teenagers and children starting from 1937. Later, it might be exactly Benito Mussolini who Rodari sarcastically depicted as Signor Tomato in ‘The Adventures of Chipollino.’
In Soviet movie ‘The Adventures of Chipollino’ Gianni Rodari played… himself.
The idea to write a tale for children came to Rodari because of his favorite childhood’s book ‘The Adventures of Pinocchio’ by Carlo Collodi.
Mister Pumpkin in ‘The Adventures of Chipollino’ is not really a pumpkin, but… a zucchini, he is even called Zucchina (by the way, on the first illustrations by Raul Verdini he is nothing else but a zucchini). He became a pumpkin in translation by Zlata Potapova.
All descriptions of chapters in ‘The Adventures of Chipolliono’ in Italian are in verse.
The first illustrator of ‘The Adventures of Chipollino’ and other Rodari’s tales was the caricaturist from the same newspaper Rodari worked in. It was Raul Verdini, and it was him who invented an image of a boy with an onion-head.
Chipollino was a member of ‘The Funny Toons Club’ from the children’s magazine ‘Funny Pictures’, it was a comic book – endless series of stories in pictures, incredibly popular among young readers in USSR. Other members were Neznaika, Thumbelina, Burattino, Karandash and others.
Contrary to established opinion that all good characters in ‘The Adventures of Chipollino’ are vegetables, and all the bad ones are fruits and berries, on the ‘good side’ we have Master Raisin, Professor Pear, the young Count Cherry himself, the Strawberry Girl, and the forester, Mister Blueberry. And the antagonist of Chipollino, Signor Tomato, is hardly any fruit.
Fairy Befana from ‘The Adventures of Blue Arrow’ in Russian translation became simply ‘the Fairy’. Whereas it is Befana who performs duties of Santa Clause in Italy – she delivers presents to good kids. In translation by Irina Konstantinova, who translated ALL books by Gianni Rodari, the fairy regained her name.
